The Thin Red Line

I think I have this game down to a science now. Whenever I watch a new movie, I make notes about interesting scenes that Dan might use. The alligator/crocodile scene above is just such an example. In this same movie, he might also have chosen one of the flashback romantic sequences. Yes, he would do this for a war film! Anyway, Terrence Malick's entry into the war movie sweepstakes pales against Saving Private Ryan, but is still interesting to watch.

Red Beard

I'm doing these films out of order because that's the way I guessed them. Whenever I see a feudal Japanese film, the first thing I think of is Akira Kurosawa, and then, Toshiro Mifune. I skip Cinemania, because the best pictorial book on Kurosawa's films is Donald Richie's The Films of Akira Kurosawa. After a minute of browsing, the answer pops up as Red Beard. Mr. Richie uses the same scene in his book.

The Red Balloon  The Red Balloon, Box Art

By the time I got to this movie, I knew red was in the title. The clue was the fifth question of the week, i.e., what do these four films have in common? To verify the above guess, pay a visit to Amazon.com, where I got a cover photo of the movie. Mr. Moviegame advises me that anyone wishing to take a course in Foreign Films 101 should include the book, Chronicle of the Cinema, in his/her curriculum. Apparently, this book also contains a photo of the boy and the balloon. By the way, Cinemania misidentifies this movie as being in B&W. This is one of the few mistakes I have ever found in this impressive reference.

The Covered Wagon  J. Warren Kerrigan

Last but not least, we get to the above movie. We know red is in the title, but we don't know where! Is it buried in Laredo, Redstone, or some other word? What we basically need is a list of western movies that we can do a text search on. If you have been alert, then you should have noticed that on the main page of this FAQ, there is a link to just such a list, consisting of many (but not all) Laserdiscs published up to 1995. Trust me, The Covered Wagon is the best fit. To prove my point, I have included a photo of the star of this movie, J. Warren Kerrigan.
