Here's a movie that most of us have seen several times. It just happens to be repeated quite often on TV. The top scene is rolling while the opening credits are going by, so you have to pay attention early on. Hope you didn't confuse the actor (Redford) with Bruce Payne from Passenger 57. The cars in the screen shot are 70's gas guzzlers! There is actually another scene which I thought Dan would do, and that is shown in the second frame. It fits thematically with the quiz (movies with numbers in the title). According to Tina Chen (Redford's co-worker and possible girlfriend), the Chinese symbol is an idiogram for 10, or heaven. How many of you would have guessed the movie correctly, given this shot? The funniest lines from the movie were: Redford: "Have I raped you (yet)?" Dunaway: "The night is young." I guess this type of screenwriting did not amuse Pauline Kael, because she gave the movie a very
lukewarm review. Personally, I think the movie is one of Redford's better
efforts (without Paul Newman). It makes you wonder how effective the C.I.A.
really is, though, considering the billions of dollars they have spent.
Ultimately what won the cold war (and the battle for economic supremacy) was American technology, not covert
operations or espionage. |

Notes: The other movies of the week were easy to guess once you figured out the number theme. Pi could be deduced from Monica Sullivan's book. Some of you have written to me that you found the shot on Mr. M's site. Good sleuthing, folks. Hard Eight is more or less the only Vegas movie (with a 2.35:1 AR) that fits the shot Dan did. Finally, Buffalo '66 is easy if you recognize Vincent Gallo (actor/director) or Christina Ricci. It's good to see the quizmaster do more Indie and semi-indie films. |
