Publicity shot from Hallelujah

This should have been a fairly easy movie to guess, but it wasn't. Turns out it was a 4-pt movie. Ouch, that hurt. First note that the cast is all-black. Just searching on this keyword (black) using Cinemania yields 24 pertinent hits, 16 of which can be eliminated for various reasons (e.g., not black & white, or story doesn't fit). This leaves Cabin in the Sky, Hallelujah, Boy! What a Girl, Green Pastures, among others. My joke guess for the movie title was, Francis, the Jive Talking Mule. The black dude riding the donkey/mule looks like Ben Vereen (ha-ha). He ain't recognizable. There's a black angel in Cabin in the Sky who looks a little like this dude, but not enough, apparently. During the week, I found no pictures of Hallelujah anywhere on the internet, including the TV Guide Website. Their webmaster must have been on drugs, because he showed a bogus photo from some skinhead flick. In any event, after the quiz, I decided to contact Mr. Moviegame, resident AOL guru, and he sent me a scan of the actor (Daniel L. Haynes) who appeared in the film, which as we all know now, is Hallelujah.

Note: The second image is a publicity shot from Hans J. Wollstein's book Vixens, Floozies, and Molls, showing Daniel L. Haynes and Nina Mae McKinney. Moviegame also told me about David Shipman's book, The Story of Cinema, soon to be an essential reference in my library. You may wish to borrow this book from the public library. There are excellent chapters on international film, as well as American cinema.
